John Looby

John Looby son of William and Ann Looby was born about 1843, in Ireland. John worked as a Puddler (means of making iron and steel) in Troy, New York. About 1869 John married Martha (O’Neil) Looby daughter of John and Margaret O'Neil was born about 1839, also in Ireland. Her given name was Margaret. They immigrated to the United States around 1879 and settled in Troy, New York. Some census recordings show their family address as 373 First Street Troy, New York with their daughter Martha Fanning (Looby) and her family at the same address. Their son James Patrick Looby lived across the street. John died on February 4, 1921 at his residence (373 First Street Troy, N.Y.). His funeral was held at St Joseph’s Church in Troy on February 7, 1921. Martha Died on September 25, 1920. Her funeral was also at St. Joseph’s on September 28, 1920. They were both laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Troy, N.Y.

On November 24, 1855 John married Amelia (Stammers) McGarry. Amelia was born 1835, in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland to Joseph and Marion (Turnbull) Stammers. John and Amelia met while John was studying to be a priest in Scotland. Census records show that from June 5 1870 to June 7 1880 John and Amelia lived in North Greenbush, New York. They also lived in Troy, New York. John died on June 24, 1895, the cause of death was angina pectoris. His funeral was held on June 28, 1895 from St. Michael’s Church. He was buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Troy N.Y. Amelia died on February 21 1896, aged about 60, in Troy, New York. Her funeral was held on February 24, 1896 from St. Michael’s Church.

James Patrick Looby son of John and Martha (O‘Neil) Looby was born March 1870, in New York. James worked as a bookkeeper for Cold Storage Plant. He later was appointed Cold Storage Inspector for the New York State Department of Health. About 1897 James married Margaret Loretta (McGarry) Looby who was born about 1875, in New York, to John and Amelia (Stammers) McGarry. Margaret was sometimes called “Gae Gae”. Census records show that from June 11, 1900 to April 4, 1930 James and Martha lived Across the street from James’s parents, John and Martha Looby and his sister, Martha (Looby) Fanning. at 376 First Street Troy New York. 1930 records indicate that their daughter Martha (Looby) Schmidt and her family lived at this same address. James died on May 2, 1940 at his home (376 First St. Troy, N.Y.), after a short illness. His funeral was held Monday May 6, 1940 from St Joseph’s church in Troy. He was buried in St Joseph’s  cemetery in Troy. Margaret died on April 29 1953, aged about 77, at her home: 376 First Street Troy, New York. Her funeral was May 2 1953, at St. Joseph’s Church in, Troy New York.

JOHN CHARLES LOOBY married ISABELLE BAXTER GEAGAN
John Charles Looby son of James and Margaret (McGarry) Looby. was born on December 14 1898. John Charles attended LaSalle High School in Troy, New York. He went to Siena College in Loudonville, New York and studied law at Albany Law School. On September 12 1918 he enlisted for WWI. From 1920 to 1924 John was the assistant dean of Albany Law School.Prior to opening his own law firm under the name of Watson & Looby, John was Special Deputy Attorney General for the State of New York . In 1948 he took a position with Siena College as an associate professor of business law. In 1920 John married Isabelle B. (Geagan) Looby. John happened to be looking out a courthouse window, and upon seeing Isabelle brushing her hair through a window at Columbia Place he became completely smitten. Isabelle was born on September 3 1902 to  James Gray and Mary Etta (Hill) Geagan. Census records show that the family resided at 103 8th Avenue Watervliet, New York. The family later lived at 10 South Lyons Avenue in Menands, New York. (This Single-Family Home was built in 1913 has 4 beds, 2 ½ baths, and is approximately 3,054 square feet). John died on October 12 1953, aged 54, at his home at 10 South Lyons Ave. Menands, New York. His funeral was October 15 1953, at St Joan of Arc Parish in Menands, New York. Isabelle died on July 28 1964, aged 61, at her home, 715 6th ave. Watervliet, New York. Her funeral was held July 30 1964 at St. Bridgets Church. They were buried in Saint Agnes Cemetery Menands, New York.
